Endoscopy

A well-trained veterinarian will be able to deliver a broad range of services, from diagnostics to surgical procedures. At Sherwood Family Pet Clinic, we frequently perform diagnostic evaluations using our state-of-the-art technology. One valuable diagnostic procedure we offer is endoscopy. During endoscopy, a camera-equipped, flexible, thin, tube-like instrument is inserted into the upper digestive tract. The instrument is used to investigate the esophagus, the stomach, and the beginning part of the small intestine for medical abnormalities. Endoscopy is used to diagnose issues within the digestive system. If your pet is about to undergo an endoscopy, here is what you need to know about this procedure.

What Is Diagnosed with an Endoscopy?

When an animal is experiencing frequent vomiting, nausea, or loss of appetite, these are usually signs of a medical problem in the digestive system. Endoscopy is often used to collect tissue samples and identify conditions such as stomach ulceration, inflammation, or cancer within the upper digestive tract.

What Can Endoscopy Treat?

While endoscopy is extremely helpful for making a diagnosis in some conditions, it can also be used to remove foreign material from the stomach.

Is an Endoscopy Procedure Safe?

When performed by a trained veterinarian, endoscopy is a safe procedure. However, some rare risks come with performing endoscopy, including a potential bleeding complication, an increased risk of infection, or even a tear of the gastrointestinal tract. To reduce any risk of endoscopic complications, we will recommend ways for you to properly prepare your pet. Our veterinarians often recommend fasting hours before a procedure. There might also be after-care instructions for the pet's recovery, such as sedative medication or a monitoring period.
